Boliden Tara Mines

Boliden Tara Mines, Ireland

Delivering Long-Term Underground Mining Solutions

Since 2009, QME has been a trusted mining contractor at Boliden Tara Mines, one of Europe’s largest underground zinc mines. Over the past 15+ years, QME has delivered multiple major contracts across mine development, rehabilitation, infrastructure installation, shotcrete production, underground logistics and the strategic Tara Deep expansion.

Working in an operating underground mine requires exceptional planning, safety standards and engineering expertise. QME has consistently delivered complex projects while maintaining production schedules and supporting the long-term future of the mine.

Development Contract

Driving Underground Expansion

QME has successfully completed multiple underground development contracts for Boliden Tara Mines, with the largest being the SWEX #4 Development Contract.

The project involved:

  • Over 7,500 metres of underground lateral development
  • More than 1.44 million tonne-kilometres of mucking operations
  • Installation of almost 50,000 resin rebar roof support bolts
  • More than 9,000 m³ of shotcrete
  • Approximately 124,000 m² of underground shotcrete application

The scope included every stage of underground development:

  • Drilling & blasting
  • Mucking and trucking
  • Ground support
  • Rock bolting
  • Meshing
  • Screening
  • Mechanical & manual scaling
  • Underground service installation
  • Shotcrete application

QME also excavated and constructed four underground raise-bore chambers, completing the shotcreting, bolting, concrete pads and associated water infrastructure required to support future mining operations.

By providing a complete in-house contracting solution, QME enabled Boliden to accelerate access to new ore bodies without disrupting existing production activities.

Refurbishment & auxiliary

Refurbishment & Auxiliary Contract

Extending Mine Infrastructure

Beyond development works, QME has undertaken a wide range of rehabilitation and underground infrastructure projects that have extended the operational life and safety of critical mine workings.
Key projects included:

Rehabilitation & Pipeline Installation

QME completed extensive rehabilitation works involving:
  • Mechanical scaling
  • Manual scaling
  • Removal of damaged ground support
  • Rebolting
  • Remeshing
  • Shotcrete application
  • Underground pipeline installation

Pump Station Installation

QME designed specialist installation methods to safely fit over:
  • 3,500 metres of heavy-wall 12-inch pipeline
  • Alongside 1,500 metres of active underground conveyors

Working within extremely confined operating mine roadways required bespoke lifting equipment designed and manufactured by QME specifically for the project.

Conveyor Drift Rehabilitation

QME restored critical conveyor access drifts through:
  • Ground support replacement
  • Meshing
  • Rock bolting
  • Shotcrete lining
  • Working safely around live conveyor infrastructure

Underground Mucking Operations

QME also supplied and operated dedicated underground mucking fleets to support ongoing mine production, providing flexible underground logistics while maintaining operational efficiency.
These auxiliary contracts demonstrate QME’s ability to deliver specialist engineering solutions in complex underground environments while working safely around live mining operations.

Tara Deep

Tara Deep Project

Supporting the Next Generation of Tara Mines

As Boliden continues investing in the future of Tara Mines, the Tara Deep Project represents one of the most significant developments in extending the mine’s operational life.

The Tara Deep deposit is located approximately 1 kilometre southeast of the existing mine and contains substantial additional zinc and lead resources that will support future production.

QME has been heavily involved in supporting this strategic expansion through underground development and specialist mining services required to access the new orebody.
The project demands:
  • Deep underground development
  • Advanced ground support
  • Underground infrastructure installation
  • Ventilation services
  • Pumping infrastructure
  • Specialist mining equipment
  • High safety standards within challenging geological conditions

Working at depths approaching 1 kilometre below surface, the Tara Deep project requires experienced mining personnel, specialised equipment and precise engineering planning.

QME’s extensive knowledge of the existing Tara operation positions the company as a key contractor supporting the long-term development of one of Europe’s most important underground mining operations.

Surface

Surface Contract

Complete Surface Materials & Shotcrete Production

QME also operates one of the most advanced surface support operations for Tara Mines through the installation and ongoing management of its batching and aggregate processing facilities.

The surface contract includes:

QME Batching Plant

Following successful pilot trials, QME commissioned a full production batching plant supplying the mine with:
  • Underground shotcrete
  • Structural concrete
  • Road fill materials
  • Engineered concrete products

The plant now produces approximately:

  • 2,150m³ of shotcrete every month
  • 150m³ of concrete every month

with product delivered underground on demand.

Aggregate Processing

QME installed a screening and washing facility capable of producing:
  • Sand
  • 10mm aggregate
  • 50mm aggregate

These materials are used for:

  • Underground road construction
  • Shotcrete manufacture
  • Concrete production
  • Bulkhead construction
The project transformed approximately 1.5 million tonnes of surface waste rock into valuable construction materials, significantly reducing environmental impact through recycling and reuse.

This innovative approach received environmental recognition for reducing the mine’s operational footprint while improving material quality and availability.
