Avoca Mines, Wicklow

Avoca Mines Rehabilitation Project, County Wicklow, Ireland

Specialist Mine Rehabilitation & Environmental Remediation

QME was appointed to deliver specialist underground rehabilitation works at the historic Avoca Mines in County Wicklow, Ireland. Once one of Europe’s most significant copper mining districts, the Avoca mines are now the focus of an extensive environmental remediation programme aimed at improving public safety, protecting the environment and preserving an important part of Ireland’s industrial heritage.

Drawing on decades of underground mining and civil engineering experience, QME provided specialist solutions to stabilise historic mine workings, rehabilitate underground infrastructure and safely carry out works within one of Ireland’s most challenging former mining environments.

Support & Stabilisation

Ground Support & Stabilisation

Securing Historic Underground Infrastructure

The Avoca Mines contain extensive historic underground workings developed over several centuries of mining activity.

QME’s experienced underground teams delivered specialist stabilisation works including:

  • Mechanical and manual scaling
  • Installation of rock reinforcement systems
  • Ground support installation
  • Mesh and bolt installation
  • Rehabilitation of deteriorated excavations
  • Underground safety improvements

These works helped secure ageing mine infrastructure while reducing the long-term risks associated with abandoned underground excavations.

Specialist Underground Engineering

Delivering Complex Rehabilitation Solutions

Unlike new mine development, rehabilitation projects require a detailed understanding of historic mining methods, ageing infrastructure and unpredictable ground conditions.

QME provided:

  • Specialist underground mining personnel
  • Underground drilling equipment
  • Ground engineering expertise
  • Specialist excavation techniques
  • Underground project management
  • Risk assessment and engineering supervision
The company’s integrated approach allowed complex rehabilitation works to be completed safely while maintaining strict environmental and health and safety standards.

Environmental Remediation Support

Supporting the Long-Term Restoration of Avoca

The Avoca Mines Rehabilitation Project forms part of the wider programme to improve safety and address the environmental legacy of historic mining in the Avoca Valley.

QME’s rehabilitation works supported the broader objectives of:

  • Improving public safety
  • Stabilising historic mine workings
  • Protecting underground infrastructure
  • Supporting future environmental remediation
  • Preserving significant mining heritage
  • Reducing long-term risks associated with abandoned mine workings
The project contributes to the long-term restoration of one of Ireland’s most historically important mining regions, where government-led remediation continues to address historic mine hazards and environmental impacts.
