Underground Tunnelling & Raise Boring for Europe's Largest Coastal Quarry

Between February 2013 and July 2014, QME was appointed by Aggregate Industries UK (now Holcim UK) to deliver specialist underground works as part of Project Highlander at Glensanda Super Quarry on Scotland’s west coast.

Recognised as Europe’s largest coastal granite quarry, Glensanda supplies millions of tonnes of high-quality aggregate to construction projects throughout the UK and Europe. The Project Highlander expansion was designed to increase production capacity through the construction of a new underground material handling system linking the quarry to its coastal shipping terminal.

Engineering a Major Quarry Expansion

QME was responsible for the complete underground package, delivering the design, tunnelling and raise boring works required to construct the new underground infrastructure.

The contract included:

 

  • Underground tunnel development

  • Shotcrete application
  • Underground excavation and rock handling
  • Final underground civil works
The project formed a critical part of the quarry’s long-term expansion, creating a new underground transport system that enables granite to be efficiently transferred from the quarry face to the coastal export facility.

Development

Underground Development Contract

Creating the Underground Conveyor System

QME completed the excavation and construction of approximately 320 metres of underground tunnel through hard granite beneath the mountain.

The development included:

 

  • Construction of a 4m x 4m transport tunnel
  • Development of approximately 300 metres of lateral underground excavation
  • Excavation of underground access drives
  • Installation of permanent ground support
  • Rock bolting and reinforcement
  • Underground shotcrete lining
  • Mechanical scaling and final excavation works
The tunnel was designed to connect directly with a new underground conveyor system, allowing quarried rock to be transported efficiently from the production area to the shipping facilities on the coast.

System

Raise Boring & Underground Chambers

Constructing the Material Transfer System

One of the most technically demanding aspects of the project was the construction of the vertical material transfer system.

QME completed:

 

  • A 4-metre diameter raise-bored shaft
  • Approximately 200 metres of vertical raise boring
  • Construction of the underground Glory Hole Chamber
  • Construction of the Conveyor Chamber
  • Final excavation and bench removal above the conveyor installation
  • Permanent ground support and shotcrete finishing works

The completed raise bore allows blasted granite from the surface to fall through the vertical shaft into the underground chamber before being transferred via conveyor to the secondary crushing and processing plant.

 

This innovative underground design significantly improves operational efficiency while reducing haulage distances and increasing production capacity.

Operating within a remote underground environment required a specialist fleet of mining and tunnelling equipment.

QME deployed:

To support the remote nature of the project, QME established a fully self-contained site camp incorporating workshops, offices, stores and maintenance facilities, enabling uninterrupted project delivery throughout the 18-month contract.

Delivering a World-Class Quarry Infrastructure

Supporting Long-Term Production

Project Highlander has transformed the movement of material within Glensanda Super Quarry.

The completed underground infrastructure now enables granite to move seamlessly from the quarry through the underground tunnel network to the processing plant before being conveyed directly to ships berthed at the coast for export across the UK and Europe.

 

QME’s integrated approach—combining engineering design, underground excavation, raise boring, ground support and specialist mining equipment—allowed the project to be delivered safely and efficiently within one of Europe’s most challenging quarry environments.
